Meet Ryan Jackson

Ryan Jackson is passionate about three main things: the Lord, his family, and farming. He grew up on and around the farm - learning the ropes from his dad was more like a part of normal day to day life than job training or working. From as young as five, he and his brothers would be given small tasks around the ranches such as pruning, suckering the trees, talking with field workers to learn Spanish, and driving tractor. They also held jobs in the packing sheds to learn the ins and outs of how all the equipment works, how much labor goes into sorting a good box of fruit, and how the two work together as efficiently as possible. Despite all of the progress that has been made in field equipment and technology over the years, for Ryan, the most helpful improvement he has seen as a grower is in variety selection. It is the defining element that makes a grower stand out from the rest of “the good growers”. The ability to cross-pollinate and produce new, more flavorful varieties has been around for centuries, but being able to discover and propagate new flavors firsthand keeps things exciting. So what is his favorite variety? When it comes right down to it, it is more about the eating experience than a specific variety - that first ripe, juicy, and perfectly balanced sweet apricot of the season is the standout flavor, in his opinion. Because when you have good varieties planted, you can enjoy them all.

Farming presents many challenges, but Ryan considers the most difficult or challenging part to be facing the unknown every day. Hail, fluctuating temperatures, insects, pollination sets, equipment troubles, water and labor availability. So many other factors change on a daily basis and you have to adapt to these changes. You cannot know what challenges you will face that day or whether or not they way you respond to them will help or hurt you at the end of the season. It is a daily lesson in trusting the Lord to provide for the needs of your family and your company. And if he wasn’t farming here, Ryan would most likely be teaching the lessons he has learned here to poor people farming in other regions around the world as his mission field. The most important things he has to teach his children about life, whether they choose to farm or not, is to trust the Lord in every season and situation, to have the perseverance to see things through in the good times and the bad. He is training them to work hard, and to meet every challenge with integrity - the rest will follow just fine.
